MEMORY SCROLL V

A Time of War

Fukengaku•2 min read

After generations, there appeared an outstanding general among the descendants of the warriors, whose name was also Fuken. It was as if he was a reincarnation. Back then, those chaotic times had lasted more than a hundred years. There were a number of heroic generals, but Fuken stood out for his talent in commanding troops in battle, even though his ambitions did not lie in combat. One day, a villager told him that he’d gone to commemorate his son who had been killed in the war, only to find the tomb plundered. Fuken’s confidante spoke to him, “It’s not the first time such a thing has happened and since General Aono found out who was responsible. He asks that you send troops to help suppress them!” Fuken was silent. The confidante added, “That person did whatever it took to win and even used a forbidden spell to resurrect the soldiers buried in the mountains to help her fight. That is a grave taboo, General!” Fuken was still silent. Deep in thought, he stared at the distant mountains. The confidante’s tone became more agitated, “The war is getting bad. She had resurrected an army of soldiers. You must fight!” Having said his piece, the confidante rushed away and Fuken lost sight of him. Pensive, Fuken gazed at the cups and the pot on the table in front of him. In the clay pot, there remained the dregs of some Memory Dew. He drowned it in one go, and a scene from a past life flashed through his mind. Why did Kasagumo, who had made an agreement with him to defend the mountain for generation after generation, use forbidden spells to resurrect the dead to fight alongside her? In the long run, the spiritual power of the mountain would be exhausted…its time for a resolution. Finally, Fuken confronted her on the battlefield. The beacons were flaming, and both of them were as determined as the mountains. In that battle, the casualty toll of both armies were extremely high, but no one would be resurrected to serve as the living dead again. In later generations, some people speculated Fuken achieved a pyrrhic victory, others said he went into seclusion. In any case, both armies had waned since that war. Whether it was Fuken, the famous general of the mountains, or Kasagumo, the masked female general who resurrected the dead, they had been both crushed by war.
