Divine Servants
Once upon a time, there was a god of an ancient mountain. He wanted to create divine servants in his own image to help him protect the mountain. Their bones would be made of the cloud-shaped rock from the mountain top, their flesh he would shape with the fertile soil, and their souls would be filled with the spiritual power of the mountain. However, the rock did not have a heart. No matter how hard he tried, the rock would neither move nor speak. And soon, they were dried up and broken in the mountain god’s hands. Chitose, the little stone tortoise which was next to him said slowly, “For a rock to have a soul, it must have a heart; and for one to bring it to life, it must have a soul. Do you know what its heart desires, Lord Mountain God?” The mountain god immediately understood and went back to the mountain top. From the very beginning, the rock had been looking up into the sky, mesmerized by the clouds. When the clouds got close enough to touch it, the rock was infused with the heart and soul it needed. The ancient mountain god split the rock in two. One half, he mixed with fertile soil and molded into a man called Fuken, named after the mountain god himself. The other half was mixed with clouds, molded into a woman and named after the cloud of the mountain, called Kasagumo. In this way, they would care for each other, watch over each other, keeping their own forms. There was a sudden change in the high heavens…the divine sword which had been suppressing the Evil God plummeted to the ground. In order to break through the seal, the Evil God’s filth penetrated the ground and swallowed up the creatures living in the mountain. Alone, the ancient mountain god battled against evil and its filth until his strength was exhausted. In preparation for the approaching crisis, he distributed the remaining power of his soul to his two divine servants. He intended to seal the overflowing filth of the Evil God in his own body to cleanse the mountain. The ancient mountain god spirited away, leaving the divine servants on look-out duty. They did not have the chance to meet again. If the power of the mountain god’s soul which had been bestowed on the divine servants was again brought together, he would awaken again after a hundred years. But no one expected the filth to turn into a curse and silently attach itself to the two divine servants, separating his soul forever. The next moment, the mountain shook, the sky and the earth changed color. Before they could do anything, Fuken and Kasagumo were dragged into the cycles of reincarnation.
