Crossed Path
Wild winds whip up yellow sand and ravage the endless desert. With an easy, unhurried air, Fuzenkitsune strolls across the land that now belongs to him. After casually yanking a sandfolk traveler out of a patch of quicksand, he is warmly welcomed into the sandfolk's camp. That night, by the fire, the sandfolk lower their voices and speak in awe of something strange. Deep in the heart of the desert, a dazzling flower field appears out of nowhere overnight.
Anything this unnatural has to mean trouble, and faced with such an eerie sight, no one in the tribe dares go anywhere near it. Fuzenkitsune, however, only raises a brow, his wild fox curiosity fully hooked. Once he learns where the flower field lies, he politely turns down the tribe's attempts to keep him there and heads alone into the depths of the storming sands. After climbing over a towering dune, he actually catches waves of rich floral fragrance drifting through the burning wind.
Before him lies a miracle that should never exist in this dead desert, a sea of blossoms swaying brightly in full bloom. Fuzenkitsune drops his lazy look and opens his strange eye.
In an instant, the dazzling field sheds its surface illusion. What fills his sight is a torrent of golden fortune, radiant and powerful like the blazing sun itself. That overwhelming current of fate surges wildly through the flower field, and its source points directly to the very center. With fortune like that, this has to be someone extraordinary. Naturally, that only makes him even more curious. Planning to just take one look and leave, he parts the waist-high flowers and walks forward.
At the center of the sea of blooms, there is no divine relic or wondrous treasure, only a patch of sunken sand. That almost tangible golden blessing spills up from beneath it like flowing water, forcing this impossible burst of life into being. Fuzenkitsune crouches down and brushes aside the fine sand covering it. First he sees a strip of bloodstained cloth, and then he digs a gravely wounded man out from the quicksand.
What a letdown... so it's just some ordinary guy. Yet within the vision of his strange eye, Fuzenkitsune sharply catches a shadow of darkness. A thick mass of black energy grips the man's chest, trying to devour more of that brilliant gold. And still, even in unconsciousness, some instinct buried deep within the man's soul forms an unbreakable wall, resisting the black energy's invasion with absolute refusal to yield.
Fuzenkitsune's gaze lingers slightly as he looks at the man's tightly furrowed brow and the aura of someone who refuses to back down even at death's edge. That look... feels awfully familiar. He thinks of himself long ago. Back then, with broken demonic power, cornered by a towering giant Oni, he too refuses to bow his head and tears through the impossible in that dead end, awakening his strange eye.
Tch... I don't care one bit whether you live or die, but it would be a shame to let such a beautiful color disappear. He reaches out, a faint glow gathering at his fingertips, and slips his hand straight into the clash of fate itself. Then he gives a sharp pull, tearing most of that vile black energy right out of the man's chest. My power only takes care of this much.
The rest... with a frame like yours, you can probably tough it out yourself. The man's breathing gradually steadies, and the golden fortune no longer spills out in wild disorder. Fuzenkitsune pats the sand from his hands and rises to his feet. One good deed a day. Not a bad day at all! He casually plucks the fullest bloom nearby and twirls it in his hand. Then, humming some nameless wild fox tune, he turns and disappears into the sweeping yellow sands, never looking back.
